A Humiliating U-turn by Paswan

"Politics is the art of the possible. Politics is not a science, but an art."

- Bismarck

Yes, politics is the game of  possibilities. In the laboratory of politics, even inert gas take part in reactions and  the public can have chance to see the strangest by-products. Here, options are never closed. And, Ramvilas Paswan is the well-known veteran political artist who can make anything possible. He knows very well how to play master- strokes in practical politics, as he firmly believes in Henry Adams' unforgettable statement that

"Practical politics consists in ignoring facts".

In politics, who cares one's own popular, emphatic, impressive,  figurative and mass-appealing slogan given in past. Because,
"History is past politics and politics present history".
-R.L.Stevenson

Today, I remember a famous slogan by Ramvilas Paswan :

"मैं उस घर में दीया जलाने चला हूँ, जहाँ सदियों से अंधेरा है ।"

I first saw this sentence in 1995 in the form of graffiti in the streets of  Alouli, khagaria, Bihar, the birth-place of Paswan. Since then I've been trying to understand the nature and tendency of  his politics very minutely and closely and I've yet to understand it. The atmosphere of my family has been political. My father has been associated with Socialist Party, Janta Party, Lok Dal and the undivided Janta Dal. He was the District General Secretary of  Lok Dal and  District Vice-President of Janta Dal. Later, he also became the P.A. of a Cabinet Minister, Govt. of Bihar. Due to alliance of Janta Dal with Communist Parties in Bihar, Late Surya Narayan Singh ( Ex M.P., Baliya), Shatrughna Pd. Singh ( Ex M.P., Baliya ), Satya Narayan Singh ( Ex M.L.A., Chautham ), etc. used to visit my home. Gradually, I started taking interest in politics in general and Communism in particular and reading "Nyaya Chakra", "Lok Lahar", "Janshakti", etc. and with a clear vision, I decided to follow and practise  fair politics with solid principles.

The recent unconfirmed news of alliance between LJP and BJP has compelled me to re-think about the dynamics of the politics and visualise the compulsion of the graph of  the political career of Ramvilas Paswan, who has served the country as the Leader of the House in Lok Sabha and was considered next to P.M. during the term of office of H.D.Deve Gowda and Late I.K.Gujral. Who can forget his historical speech in Lok Sabha in a discussion on Mandal Commission in August, 1982 ? But why did this promising politician fail to prove himself as a national leader ? Quick and emotional decision-making, lack of stability with allied parties, lack of patience and foresight, fivestar culture, negligence of disregard of dedicated, committed and  reliable workers, no serious attempt to win the heart of voters and increase the base-vote, no regular visit to constituencies, etc. are some of the main reasons of his failure that became the cause of his political helplessness and dependence on others. This parasitic condition has forced him to align with BJP which is going to the political kurukshetra under the leadership of Narendra Modi against whose non-feasance Ramvilas Paswan was the first to resign from the Cabinet of Vajpayee in 2002.

Supremo of regional parties take decisions according to their convenience and align with an eye to the possibility of victory on more and more seats, even on the condition of the murder of their own ideologies (if they have any). But, it's very difficult for the adaptability of their supporters who feel shocked and cheated on the drastic change in the strategical behaviour of leaders. It's not only the politics of opportunism, but also the dilution of values and principles. Paswan's decision to go with BJP is the best possible example of dual politics and hybridised policy, whatever the reasons might be behind it.

Yesterday, I was at Alouli, the native place of Paswan. Here, his followers and even blind supporters are very surprised and stunned at his insight. Even Paswan had to say," On the one hand, I've my personal feelings, on the other there is the concern of party". Then who is giving him advice or affecting his decision ? His son and the President of the Parliamentary Board of the Party, Chirag Paswan can be seen unnecessarily  in a hurry to reach Lok Sabha with the crutch of BJP, whom his father has been abusing for spreading communal disharmony for previous 11 years. The Party spokespersons are giving very unreasonable, unconvincing, unsuitable, ludicrous and illogical logic. They say that the Supreme Court has given Narendra Modi a clean chit, so our leader has also done the same. Absolute rubbish...

Lord Bryce has aptly said, "A political career brings out the basest qualities in human nature."

सियासत आदमी को आदमी रहने नहीं देती ।
